Patti Smith and Jonathan Lethem in conversation at PEN American Center, 4 May 2010 (this is the MP3 i was listening to at 3am, on my last road trip)
yesterday, Robin and i found and followed this rusty, fallen old fence line, from where it starts, across the road from the West Fork, and climbing to the north-east ridge of Hearth Hill.

Feral Film: Duncan Jones’ “Moon” (2009) is an existential mystery, echoing the isolation of “2001”, a sojourn through inner space, with piano.
Philip Robinson: have to differ with the inner space , moon its unlike 2001 where the intelligence of a alien civilization interferes with the destiny of mankind. moon is about the slavery of man by the companies, how a clone is kept ignorant of this until he survives an accident . nothing to do with inner space .
Mykl iAm: Philip accurately describes the milieu of “Moon”, the stark landscape on which the story is erected. but there’s also an inner narrative, a confrontation with identity and existence.
admittedly, this trek through inner space (not to be confused with quantum space) is rarely expressed directly; we are spared from voiceover; it is not forced into dialog; these are not the chatty super androids of “Blade Runner”. yet, the question of who we are, given voice by the score, germinates with every passing scene. without it, “Moon” would only be a parable of heartless greed, played out in solitary despair.
i’d suggest you watch “Moon” again, and try to ignore everything you already know about the simple story. i don’t claim it has the layers of meaning you might find in Kubrick’s “2001”. but if you mine the gritty surface, you might find a layer or two of questions just below.
